A needle valve has very small orifice with a long, tapered seat, a needle shaped plunger on the end of a screw which totally fits the seat.

How it works?

As the screw is pivoted and the plunger revoked, the flow between seat and plunger is possible; however, until the plunger is completely revoked, the liquid motion is significantly impeded. Since it takes many rotates of the fine threaded screw to retract the plunger, precise regulation of the motion rate is easily possible.
